Acura Debuts the 2018 TLX A-Spec in Pikes Peak Open

Thursday, June 29th, 2017

Acura will have a fleet of vehicles taking part in the Pikes Peak Open. The turbocharged, 500-horsepower 2018 TLX A-Spec will compete in the exhibition class. The TLX GT will once again compete in the Pikes Peak Open class. The GT3-inspired Acura NSX supercar will compete in the Time Attack 1 Class and the Acura TLX and MDX will serve as official pace cars and Rookie Orientation vehicles. If you’d like to test drive the luxury counterparts of these cars, come to CardinaleWay Acura Las Vegas where we have a complete inventory of Acura new cars. This is the sixth consecutive year that Acura will race vehicles in the Pikes Peak event.

2018 Acura TLX A-Spec Racing Debut
The Pikes Peak Acura TLX A-Spec has been modified for this hill climb course. Custom engine software and tuning was done in-house by a team of North American Honda R&D engineers. In addition, all luxury appointments were removed from the inside to reduce weight. Driver Nick Robinson has run the course for several years, winning the motorcycle Pikes Peak 250 class in 2014. Last year, Robinson won the Time Attack 2 Production class, driving the 2017 NSX.

Acura TLX GT Returns to Competition
The all-wheel drive TLX GT race car features the same twin-turbo V6 motor setup used in the Pirelli World Challenge series. It has been tuned on multiple levels to accommodate the elevation changes of Pikes Peak. The TLX GT will be driven by Peter Cunningham of RealTime Racing who has been racing Acuras since 1992. This is Cunningham’s first Pikes Peak race. He has won 14 professional drivers’ championships in a variety of disciplines including road racing, ice racing and performance rallying.

“I’ve always wanted to race with Acura at Pikes Peak. It’s a challenge I’ve never done,” said Cunningham.  “I think we have a great opportunity with the Acura TLX GT and look forward to seeing how it competes on the hill.”

How & Why Crash Test Dummies Have Evolved

Wednesday, June 28th, 2017

Have you ever wondered about the dummies used in crash tests? Up until  recently, these dummies were the size of a thin, young male. However, since the 1950s-60s, the American driving population has been aging, gaining weight and now includes more women drivers. It turns out each body type reacts differently in a crash test and in real life crashes. As a result, crash dummies have evolved. At #CardinaleWayAcura Las Vegas, we look forward to any innovations that will keep drivers and passengers safer. We invite you to our Las Vegas dealership to see and test drive the Acura new cars.

Why Is It Important to Have Different-Sized Crash Dummies?
Changes in crash dummies were prompted by medical data collected by trauma experts at the University of Michigan. These experts noted the discrepancy between the traditional crash test dummies and actual crash victims. According to Stewart Wang, M.D., a trauma surgeon, “Crash-test dummies look nothing like my patients. You can’t talk about injuries without talking about the person . . . it’s individuals who are hurt. The condition, size and shape of an individual is hugely important in how severe their injuries are in any given crash.”

Wang’s insight and research prompted important changes in automotive safety. The research and engineering community is continuing to develop safety solutions based on a detailed analysis of live patients from real-world crashes rather than laboratory testing of cadavers.

Humanetics, the company that develops and makes crash test dummies, now creates dummies that reflect the size and shape of today’s drivers. For example, they now have a 273-pound obese dummy that weighs 106 pounds more than the traditional model. They’re also working on a crash dummy based on an elderly, overweight, 70-year-old woman.

RealTime Racing Acura NSX GT3 Gets SprintX Top 10 in Pirelli World Challenge

Thursday, June 22nd, 2017

The Acura NSX GT3s of RealTime Racing continues to excel in the early-season series in the Pirelli World Challenge competition. The team of Peter Kox and Mark Wilkins earned their first top-10 result in SprintX competition in a packed field. If you’d like to experience some racing adrenaline, take the 2017 NSX out for a test drive. Our CardinaleWay Acura Las Vegas dealership is conveniently located on West Sahara Avenue. We have an extensive selection of Acura new cars.

Race Results
The team of Peter Kox and Mark Wilkins made up six positions in a heavily-packed field, placing ninth in the first of two PWC SprintX races at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. The second race was cancelled due to excessive rain that caused flooding on the track.
Wilkins was able to take the #93 Acura NSX GT3 from the 15th spot to 12th position before handing off to Kox. Kox was able to gain three more positions to claim a ninth-place finish.
“The driver change was perfect,” Kox said. “We decided to leave Mark in for a little longer before making the stop. Our strategy played well because we had a few laps of clear air. I think we also made up three positions on our pit stop. We had no problems.”
The new format of the 2017 PWC now factors in regular pit stops and drive changes. In prior GT races, regular pit stops, let alone stops for driver changes, were not accounted for. The Acura squad has avoided pitfalls through the early season and used the stops to its advantage.

The Acura NSX GT3 racecar uses the same lightweight multi-material body as the production NSX. The 3.5-liter, twin-turbocharged DOHC V-6 engine also uses the same design specs as the production #2017AcuraNSX, including the heads, block, valve train, crankshaft, pistons and dry-sump lubrication system. The Acura NSX is produced at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio.

Five Signs You Need New Brake Pads

Wednesday, June 21st, 2017

It’s easy to forget about your brakes until something goes wrong. This is a big mistake! Your CardinaleWay Acura Las Vegas dealership wants to keep you safe. We encourage you to have your brakes inspected as part of your normal maintenance routine. Our factory-trained Honda technicians are always ready to help you take care of your Acura. Acura is owned by #Honda. It’s easy to call or schedule an appointment online.

The Braking System
The braking system consists of a complex network of parts. To keep this system working properly, certain parts must be replaced regularly. Generally, the part most often replaced are the brake pads since they encounter the most wear when braking. Since they experience a lot of friction, they do wear down over time. If the pads get too thin, your brakes won’t work as effectively as they should.

Five Red Flags That Your Brake Pads Need Replacing
1. When driving do you hear a faint scraping, squealing or buzzing sound that disappears when you hit the brakes? The noises you hear are actually the wear indicators. These are metal tabs located near the top of the brake pads. The grating sound is a warning that your pads are nearly worn down.
2. You hear a clicking noise when the brake pedal is pushed or released. This also indicates wear.
3. Braking takes more time than usual. This is known as “brake fade,” and is caused by applying the brakes over a long distance without bringing the car to a full stop. This causes the pads and rotors to heat up, which reduces the friction needed to stop quickly.
4. Your car pulls to one side when you brake. This means your brake pads have worn down at different rates. In addition to being unsafe, this puts unnecessary stress on the steering rack, ball joints and wheel bearings.
5. The brake pedal vibrates when pressed. This happens if the pads have become overheated. A pulsating brake pedal means the brakes are unreliable and need to be fixed immediately!

Zero Carbon Living With the Honda Smart House

Thursday, June 15th, 2017

In addition to making great cars (like Acuras), Honda is also interested in developing technologies for dealing with climate change. Honda’s Commitment to the Environment is based on its vision of “Blue Skies for our Children.” To fulfill this vision, Honda is working to advance technologies that address environmental and energy concerns. For example, Honda is targeting a 50 percent reduction in its total company CO2 emissions on a worldwide basis by 2050, compared to 2000 levels. The company has also committed to electrify two-thirds of all vehicles it produces by 2030.

Other Honda Environmental Initiatives

Other Honda environmental initiatives include the Honda Marine Science Foundation, the Environmental Leadership Program and the #HondaSmartHomeUS that showcases Honda’s vision for zero-carbon living.

The Smart Home US
The smart home allows Honda and UC Davis researchers to test gadgets, software and design, either of their own or from other companies, and monitor how well they work together. Some of the technologies are already available on the consumer market, such as solar panels by SolarCity, the energy-efficient Bosch dishwasher and the Kitchen Aid refrigerator. Other technologies are employed in new ways. LED lights are programmed to mimic the change in color and warmth of natural light—white and bright in the morning and yellow and warm near dusk. Recent research has shown that the quality of light affects human health. Honda’s energy management system monitors and controls electricity production and use throughout the home. The university’s California Lighting Technology Center, Western Cooling Efficiency Center and other departments contributed to the home’s design.

The house produces more energy than it uses throughout the year, making it a “zero net” home. California requires all new homes to be zero net energy starting in 2020. Honda posts the home’s architectural and technical designs online, says Michael Koenig, who leads the smart home project.

How to Keep Your Pets Safe While Traveling

Wednesday, June 14th, 2017

At CardinaleWay Acura Las Vegas, we want to help you keep your pets safe while you’re on the road. Here are our top safety tips from the #HumaneSociety for safe travel with your four-legged family members. We hope you’ll come to CardinaleWay Acura Las Vegas when you’re looking for a new set of wheels for your family.  We are proud to feature the entire line of Acura new cars.

Like Small Children, Pets Need to Be in Second or Third Row Seats
Your pets do not belong in the front seat! Keep them in the back seat of the car. In the event of a collision, a pet could be injured if an airbag is deployed while your pet is in the passenger seat, even if safely crated! Don’t take chances.

Animals Need to Be Crated
Securely fastened crates provide the safest way for your dog or cat to travel in the car.

Keep Pets Safely Inside the Car
Dogs and cats should always be kept safely inside the car as they can be injured by flying debris or particles. Never ever transport a pet in the bed of an open pickup truck and don’t even let them stick their heads out the windows.

 –

Make Frequent Stops
Stop often to allow your pet to exercise and go to the bathroom. Always make sure your pet is wearing a collar, ID tag and leash.

Don’t Leave Pets Alone in Your Vehicle!
A quick pit stop may feel like no time at all to you, but it’s often much too long to leave your pet alone in the car. Heat is a killer! Even when it’s a moderate 72 degrees Fahrenheit outside, the temperature inside your car can heat up to 116 degrees within an hour. Your car can reach 102 degrees in just 10 minutes on an 85-degree day, even with the windows cracked open.
